        I. CUSTOMER ENVIRONMENT / PROJECT CONTEXT

         

        Customer profile:

        Veolia Water, the water division of Veolia Environment, is the leading operating company in the world for providing water services. Specializing in the outsourced management of water services for municipal or industrial clients, it is the world leader in engineering, design and execution of construction projects for turnkey facilities and water treatment plants.  The company provides drinking water and wastewater treatment services to more than 131 million people around the world and in 2007, Veolia's revenue exceeded 10.9 billion Euros. The company holds permanent operations in 60 countries, has approximately 82,867 employees and manages close to 5,000 contracts around the world.

         

        APC was chosen as the System Integrator for the project.

         

        Customer objective and constraints:

        Veolia was looking to increase throughput from 55 to 147 Ml/d at its Clareville site within 3 years, based on a 20 year DBO (Design, Build and Operate the plant) project.

         

        •  The process system was required to be reliable and cost effective in order to ensure lower energy and maintenance costs over the 20 year period.
        •  Distributed Architecture should be modular and standardized.
        •  Veolia was seeking a long term partnership with a reliable supplier to support them throughout the DBO contract's duration.
         

        II. SOLUTION IMPLEMENTATION

        Duration:

        •  The project began in January 2008 and the first step was completed in June 2008.
        •  The project is a 3 year contract.

        Schneider Electric provided a one-stop solution to refurbish the Clareville Waste Waster plant.  The architecture included all Electrical Distribution by SE, all secure power by APC and all automation by SE which included Ethernet TCP/IP Modbus and Modicon M340s, Advantys STB, TeSysU, IP54 VSDs, Magelis HMI etc.  I/O was distributed from a Modicon PLC using the STB Advantys. The STB Advantys and the PLC were connected via an Ethernet TCP IP Modbus, with Unity handling the automatic configuration of the STB. The pumps were controlled by Altivar 71 speed drives that were connected to the PLC by CAN Open. Altivar Input and outputs were also used as Distributed I/O. The TeSys U was integrated into the Advantys so mapping would be automatically completed by Unity and the PLC. The graphic interface Magelis was programmed using Vijeo software.

         

        III. RESULTS / ACHIEVEMENT

         

        Customer benefits:

        •   1 single supplier: single point of responsibility for the complete electrical package, both technical and commercial, throughout the project's 20 year duration also opens the possibility of a single service contract.
        •  Reduced panel-build and site installation costs thanks to the IMCC solutions provided.
        •  Reduced tax liability through use of Energy Efficient products.
        •  Complete Ethernet/ Can Open integration
        •  Distributed network solution: use of networks reduced both in-panel and inter-panel cabling .
        •   Open architecture: allows connections to third party equipment
        •  Reduced Panel Requirement: the use of IP54 enclosed drives reduced the size and number of required MCCs while providing guaranteed ventilation.
        •  Easier maintenance: the use of common building blocks reduces training requirements and allows for lower maintenance costs.
        •  Lower energy costs: by using best-in-class VSD ranges monitored by PowerLogic system.
        •  Prevention from operational restrictions: by using back-up UPS systems from APC.

        Other informaitons

        The Schneider Ireland Team, led by Frank Bolger (SGBD), beat out Siemens and Rockwell to win the project. The installed base was originally provided by Rockwell, who had been the supplier for the last 15 years.
