I. CUSTOMER ENVIRONMENT / PROJECT CONTEXT
Customer profile:
- 1.4 million people supplied
- 185 million m3 of drinking water supplied per year, 48 treatment plants
- 91 million m3 of wastewater treated per year, 70 treatment plants
Customer objective and constraints:
- Improve follow-up of optimum water flow profile in a pumping station at the output of a drinking water treatment plant (in Aubagne, near Marseille),
- Improve process efficiency by smoothing water flow,
- Energy savings,
- Find a compromise between service quality and energy savings and avoiding as much as possible jolts of pressure on water distribution.
II. SOLUTION IMPLEMENTATION
Implementation methodology (main phases):
- 1. analyse customer request in terms of process management, smoothness of operation and energy savings,
- 2. estimate possible energy savings with implementation of variable speed drives
- 3. commercial offer
Solution overview (services, products, systems, architectures...) :
- 1. replacement of direct on-line starters by variable speed drives
- 2. two independent pumping systems, each one with 3 pumps in parallel (one pump in redundancy)
How did we estimate the energy savings (methodology, tools, ...)
- Energy savings have been calculated by comparison of energy consumption before and after implementation of variable speed drives, during two comparable periods: July to November, 2007 and 2008,
- Significant variable: number of kWh per m3
III. RESULTS / ACHIEVEMENT
Customer benefits:
- 20% energy savings!
- Improved process efficiency and easier process management
Customer testimonies (Verbatim):
"The major benefit of variable speed drives is the better process control. Energy savings are the icing on the cake"
